Adoptables and money!

XD How the heck does one get started in selling adoptables? I'm so envious of those who are able to make a killing at it, when I have a hard time giving them away for free. I'm fairly certain that my art skillz aren't to blame... I mean, I'm not definitely not the cream of the crop out there but I feel competent!

Is it feasible to start from scratch or does one have to promote via freebies first, or create a mystique surrounding them, or what? XD Do people ever get together so that they can produce more and then split the gain?
